I’ve written extensively about how to start weight training if you are a senior in addition to whether or not you can gain muscle after the age of 65+. Also, if you are wondering whether to lift heavy or light as a senior, then this article clears it up for you.
In this article, I’ll share a few key pieces of equipment that I recommend any seniors (ages 65+), should consider purchasing for their home.
These are pieces of equipment that I have personally recommended to many clients of mine, as well.
If you are primarily interested in cardio equipment, you can just tap or click that link to another article I’ve written. (if the link isn’t there yet it’s because I haven’t written it yet)
Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Adjustable Dumbbells
I’ve broken these down into the highest quality (most expensive), a quality and value option (mid-tier pricing), and the least convenient but also least expensive.
Highest Quality
Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells
These bad boys are easily modifiable, go up to 52.5 lbs., and are of very high quality. Bowflex is a well-known name brand and you can’t go wrong with these.
These are easily adjustable by just turning a dial, making your workouts far more efficient than having to slide the weight on and off and then having to screw the clip back on.
If you and one or two others are the only ones using these, they should last, quite literally, forever.
Quality + Value Option
LifePro Adjustable Dumbbell Set
These are similar to the Bowflex however they are a bit lower in price. They’ve got 4.7/5 stars on amazon with 81% of the reviews coming in at 5 stars.
Pretty solid particularly if you’re getting nearly the same amount of weight as the Bowflex!
You get 2.5 lbs less weight with these on each dumbbell, for a total of 50 lbs in each arm, which will be plenty for most seniors.
There is also an option to get these only up to 25 lbs which is sufficient for most exercises.
Lowest Convenience + Lowest Price
Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbell
This dumbbell set is the least convenient as you have to unscrew the clip each time you remove or add weight, however, it also comes in at the lowest price, well under the two other options.
There is the option to purchase these starting at 20 lbs per dumbbell all the way up to a 52.5 lb dumbbell.
Adjustable Kettlebells
Bowflex SelecTech Adjustable Kettlebell
Once again, Bowflex is a great brand. These adjust from 8 – 40 lbs and are around the same price which I think makes these guys the winner, overall. More optionality for a similar price.
Powerblock Adjustable Kettlebell
This adjustable kettlebell has weight options between 18 lbs and 36 lbs and will last forever.
Resistance bands for seniors
Resistance bands are another great option for home exercises or exercise if you go to the gym. Having both looped resistance bands and resistance bands with handles will cover 99% of banded exercises you could do.
Loop Resistance Bands
I’d likely get the two lightest ones to start with and then if you find those are too easy you can always purchase the heavier ones.
Resistance Bands With Handles
These come in a pack with many different resistance levels and there are attachments that help attach them to different structures in your home, garage, or gym.
I hope that was helpful and you found some of these pieces of equipment to be to your liking! I’ve recommended them to numerous clients.
